Awards presented to best UK workspaces

The annual prize for the most modern  office fit out  office fit out in Britain has been handed out.

The awards, presented by the British Council for Offices (BCO), celebrate the “best and most innovative” office spaces across the country, with the top workplace of 2014 named as Rochdale Council’s new civil offices.

Number One Riverside in Rochdale has been converted into a modern facility for the northern town, comprising a public library, cafes, and private meeting areas. A development that brings together more than 30 separate buildings, if also offers  office flooring  office flooring for Rochdale Borough Council staff.

Taking the top award for the best commercial space was the Crown-owned One Eagle Place building. It represents part of a £500m investment scheme being rolled out in the St James’s area of Piccadilly in London.

Taking the third spot in the national BCO awards was another civic property. The Council House in the Midlands town of Derby took first place for the best refurbished and recycled workplace. Through clever use of office flooring, the 1930s building saw its usable area increase by more than 50%.

Other winners this year included the offices for Arthur J Gallagher in The Walbrook Building, London, and Manchester’s The Sharp Project, which took number one in the ‘innovation’ category, offering around 250,000 sq ft of office flooring to more than 50 tech start-ups.

Home to the Guardian News and Media Group for more than six years, the Kings Place headquarters in London took the ‘Test of Time’ award.
