The BBC has announced plans to redevelop its iconic recording studios in west London, with a view to selling it on in the future.

Under the plans, the historic Maida Vale site – which now houses the BBC Singers, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Radio One Live Lounge – will see its interior transformed.

As well as the studios being refurbished to suit a new use, there will be a full ancillary office fit out office fit out.

The Beeb is hoping to then sell on the site after redevelopment, using the cash raised from the sale to create a brand new state-of-the-art studio facility within the same location.

The broadcaster will retain the freehold of the 1.33 acre site.

The broadcaster first acquired the building in the early part of the1930s as the public fell in love with radio broadcasting. Playing host to the world’s biggest musical and entertainment stars, the building is part of the institution’s fabric.

The Beeb expects the project will cost between £15 million and £40 million. The wide variance in estimations is, according to the broadcaster, down to the final plans of the chosen developer.

As the situation stands, there are no firm plans in place.

With an innovative new concept likely to be urged by the BBC, a modern design complete with mezzanine floors to open up the space could be on the agenda.

All EU firms have been invited to tender for the project, which is being publicised through the Official Journal of the European Union.
