Key Birmingham redevelopment progresses to next stage

The multimillion redevelopment of a city centre site in Birmingham is to be stepped up, with the next phase set to commence ahead of schedule.

Arena Central has been subject to a steady redevelopment over the last few years. In that time, the iconic Crowne Plaza Hotel has been refurbished and a defunct car park building pulled down.

The next phase of the 9.2 acre redevelopment will see the rest of the premises demolished, which presently comprise another car park and disused offices and hotel facilities. It is hoped that the removal of the existing structures will make the site more attractive to investors.

Investment since the downturn has been hard to come by, with the site being close to the construction of the new Library of Birmingham. However, the regeneration of the Arena Central site is seen as complementary to other such projects in the city.

Birmingham City Council cabinet member Tahir Ali said:

“I am very pleased to see the recent progress of this exciting development. Arena Central is a key part of the city centre Enterprise Zone, along with Paradise Circus.

“This important site needs to be brought back into effective use. By progressing this development we will be revitalising the area, as well as creating jobs and capturing valuable investment.”

If approval for the next phase of the scheme is granted, it is likely that the construction of 100,000 square feet of workspace with a state-of-the-art office fit out office fit out will be finalised in 2014.
