Lily Cole plans new mezzanine floor

Camden Council is considering an application from supermodel Lily Cole to extend her St. Pancras apartment by installing an additional mezzanine floor above the existing bedroom.

Mezzanine flooring Mezzanine flooring has become increasingly popular as house prices rise, with many people viewing the option of increasing their living area by utilising space that is presently unusable as a more cost-effective option than moving house.

The flat, bought by Cole in 2006, was converted from the Midland Grand Hotel in Euston Road – designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and opened in 1868 – to serve passengers travelling on the Midland Railway on the line between London and the East Midlands and Yorkshire.

Located between St. Pancras and King’s Cross stations, the Grade 1-listed Victorian gothic building has high ceilings and an impressive façade, and closely escaped demolition in the 1960s.

Renovated as part of an £800m plan to rejuvenate the station and surrounding area, the former hotel underwent extensive alteration and refurbishment in preparation for the opening of the Channel Tunnel service in the early 2000s, when the new St. Pancras station was opened by the Queen.

The plan is to link an existing mezzanine flooring level with the proposed new mezzanine level by a ‘Romeo and Juliet’ style balcony, which will add a sense of theatre and blend well with the original architecture.

As part of the re-design of the apartment, a shower room will be re-located within the flat, giving a bigger entrance with the new mezzanine floor area being used as a walk-in wardrobe.
