Mezzanine gallery expands exhibition space

A major redevelopment at York Art Gallery will see the display area expanding by 60%, with the construction of a gallery on a new mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level. The adjoining premises, which up until now have been used by the City Archives, will be incorporated into the renovation.

In preparation for the extensive refurbishment, which is expected to cost around £8m, all works of art were removed over the weekend of 4th February. In a dramatic departure from the behaviour usually expected in an art gallery, visitors to the empty gallery were invited to create their own masterpieces on the walls.

Almost 4,000 visitors attended the event and among those taking up the offer to try their hand at something different was Councillor Keith Hyman, the Lord Mayor of York. A group of local potters created a model of the gallery using clay, while children created a giant mosaic depicting the gallery. Several other groups knitted and crocheted models of diverse subjects including jellyfish and umbrellas, which were exhibited outside in Exhibition Square.

The event was accompanied by live music and a craft café with a number of activities available for visitors to try, including creating works of art using light technology.

As well as the additional space that will be created by the mezzanine floor, the ground floor will be renovated to create a large space suitable for holding major exhibitions.

The extended refurbished gallery is planned to re-open in the spring of 2015.
