The Ricoh Arena Hotel in Coventry has proven so successful as an events venue that a further 34 bedrooms have been created on a new mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level.

Previously used for the health and fitness club, the space is in the south wing of the hotel. Some of the rooms created since the conversion overlooks the stadium, while others look out over the surrounding countryside. A further seven rooms have been added in the north wing in an upgrading project, coming in at a total of £2m.

The Ricoh Arena hotel opened with 71 rooms in 2005, added a further nine rooms in 2011 and, when the new accommodation is available – which is expected to be in mid-January – will have a total capacity of 121 bedrooms.

Primarily a conference, events and exhibition venue comprising 15,000 sq m, the hotel caters for conferences with between 100 and 5,000 delegates from across a range of blue-chip and niche organisations. With many conferences lasting more than two days, on-site accommodation for organisers and important delegates can be a persuasive factor.

Utilising space on the existing mezzanine flooring level for new accommodation was considered not only the most cost-effective method of increasing the number of rooms, but also allowed the rooms to have better views.

A spokesperson for the Ricoh said that the expansion of the accommodation is a testament to the success of the hotel, which is expected to continue with strong bookings through the first six months of 2013.
