New mezzanine floor on hold as thieves steal lead

As with many successful businesses, Bearnes Primary School in Devon has big plans for the future – including expanding the school’s premises with the installation of a mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level.

To accommodate the growing number of children applying for a place, the school decided on the increasingly popular and cost-effective measure of making use of the wasted headroom in the old building. This also has the effect of leaving the external facade of the building untouched.

Bearnes Primary School was founded by Hannah Maria Bearne in 1788, with the aim of educating poor children in the parishes of Wolborough and Highweek near the market town of Newton Abbey. The school presently has a roll of 55 children aged between four and 11, with a higher than average number of children entitled to free school meals and those with special educational needs and physical disabilities.

Now the school has fallen victim to a gang of metal thieves, who have stripped 45 metres of lead flashing from the roof. This means some of the money that the school has raised towards the cost of the mezzanine flooring will have to be used for emergency repairs to the roof before winter sets in.

Nicky Dunford, Headmistress of Bearnes School, is hoping that the £50,000 project to install a mezzanine floor in the school hall will not be delayed as the cost of replacing the lead, estimated at around £2,500, will not be met by insurance.
