New West Yorkshire police HQ gets further refit

The West Yorkshire Police Headquarters at Wakefield has seen a further multi-million office fit-out, nearly one and a half-years after the facility first opened.

The £2.3 million refurbishment of a number of buildings across the headquarters, located next to a nature reserve near the M1, takes the total bill for the site to over £23 million.

It is the huge savings seen in the longer term that has driven the project though.

The buildings that were refurbished were being underused – comprising two semi-detached houses, a two storey office block and an eight storey high rise. All sites had older style offices not entirely fit for purpose.

As a result of the works, new office partitioning office partitioning, suspended ceiling systems suspended ceiling systems and new office furniture office furniture will see police teams move in from other sites spread all across Wakefield.

Nearly £700,000 will be saved each year in leasing costs, with Chloe Dummer, estate manager for West Yorkshire Police, saying:

“The refurbishment works at police headquarters has created flexible, open plan office spaces which has doubled the capacity of the buildings.

“This has allowed the force to save approximately £690,000 in annual revenue costs through the termination of leased premises in Wakefield.”

The clever use of space has also seen the total capacity offered in the buildings double after the works.

Dummer went on to say the major savings to the force are just part of a number of austerity measures being taken.

The work was put out to tender under the YORBuild procurement framework.
