Plans for mezzanine floor in new supermarket

Sainsbury’s supermarket has lodged plans with Cherwell District Council for a major expansion of a store presently under construction in Bicester town centre, Oxfordshire. The revamped plans allow for a mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level to increase the total amount of retail space to almost 6,300 sq m.

The installation of a mezzanine flooring level will give an extra 30% of sales floor space in addition to the approximately 4,900 sq m shown on the original plans for the new shop.

The entire town centre of Bicester is undergoing a major redevelopment as part of an overall £70m improvement plan for the area, which is due to open in the summer. As part of the rejuvenation, new shops, restaurants and a cinema are being built, which will boost the local economy both in extra spending and in local employment. The local council is also trying to reverse the trend for shopping at out-of-town retail parks and increasing the footfall in the town centre.

Sainsbury’s application to amend the plans is thought to be as a result of Tesco revealing its intention to expand its existing designer outlet, as well as to open a new supermarket close by, which will provide over 5,000 sq m of retail space.

The extra 1,500 sq m of sales space created on the mezzanine floor – if Sainsbury’s amended plans are passed – will not involve any changes to the external appearance of the new store.

Sainsbury’s management expects a decision to be made on the amended plans by the end of March.
