Plans for mezzanine floor in new training centre

Plans for the conversion of an existing office block at IQ Winnersh Business Park into a training centre for young people are presently before Wokingham Borough Council.

The plans under consideration include the installation of a mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level complete with new windows, a new entrance door and the construction of bicycle sheds outside.

In a collaborative project between Bracknell and Wokingham College, local schools and businesses, the new centre will provide training and life skills opportunities for 14-16 year olds still at school, as well as older teenagers who would otherwise be NEETS. Several of the courses will confer qualifications, both academic and vocational.

The proposed conversion envisages a multi-purpose space suitable for use by dance and drama groups and productions, as well as workshops fitted out with cutting-edge technology. The design will mirror a contemporary workplace to enable students to become accustomed to a professional working environment. The centre will go under the name of Aspire, to reflect the intention of raising teenagers’ aspirations.

When the premises are not occupied by students, they will be available for use by the public and already several different community groups have made enquiries about hiring space for various events.

Other than the new windows to be fitted for the mezzanine flooring level and the new entrance door, there will be very little exterior alteration.

A decision will be made on the plans within the next few weeks and, if approved, the work should be completed by September.
